National Hugging Day

Sometimes all you need is hug from the right person…and all your stress will melt away – Unknown

So if you didn’t already know, today is National Hugging Day and here at beFriend, we’re rather excited about it!

National Hugging Day is an annual holiday on 21st January, founded in 1986. Originating in Michigan, the holiday has since spread globally and people across the world are now embracing this ‘feel-good’ day! So why has this day become so popular?

We think there’s no better way to express your care for someone than by giving them a hug. When done authentically, a hug can make someone feel loved, happy and comforted, supported by research carried out in the U.S by two psychologists; Grewan and Light. They found that hugging causes the brain to release a chemical called Oxytocin, which protects the heart. In theory then, when you give someone a hug you’re keeping your hearts healthy, so it’s no wonder this celebration has really taken off!

Additionally, Kathleen Keating, a mental health counsellor, advises that hugging directly correlates with a better mental state. She explains how they can minimise feelings of loneliness, low self-esteem and ease tension. This is said to keep working even after the hug, so set yourself up every morning with a cuddle from a loved one and you’ll reap the benefits.

Enjoy National Hugging Day responsibly!
