All you need is love, but a little chocolate now and then wouldn’t hurt – Charles. M Schulz

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so I can imagine some of you are starting to panic about gift ideas! With jewellers bombarding potential customers with offers, restaurants advertising 7 course meals with champagne and hotels throwing in spa treatments with an overnight stay, it’s easy for the true meaning of Valentine’s Day to get blurred!

There is no need for this annual event to break the bank, so I’ve come up with a few sweet ideas to set your heart racing and make your Valentines’ day.

  1. Breakfast in bed! This year Valentine’s Day it’s on a Saturday so no excuses like the early morning rush before work. If you’re organised and skilled enough to cook a full English with a difference, get the bacon sizzling and add a few chocolates on the side for a special touch. Replace the cuppa with a hot chocolate and make a tomato ketchup heart over the top! Creative and cute. Or, if you would prefer a continental option, pain au chocolat! Because after all, Paris is the city of love.
  2. Make a mixtape! The idea of putting a selection of songs together for you Valentine may seem dated, but Milktape are bringing it back with a cassette device that is actually a USB ( The Milktape holds an average of 15 songs, is Mac and PC compatible and can be personalised by writing on it or the stickers included. You simply drag and drop your songs from any folder on iTunes and they are available from Amazon from £10.
  3. Cook up a storm! If you’re anything like me, cooking is probably not your forte! Get yourself down to one of your local supermarkets as they usually do deals such as ‘two can dine for £15’ with a bottle of wine. All meals are ready made for you to pop in the oven with zero stress or worry. However, if you want to go that extra mile, check out for meal ideas and recipes that you can try yourself.
  4. Activities over gifts! If you’re stumped as to what to get your valentine this year, why not choose something you can do together. Get onto Groupon for ideas on spa retreats, low-cost weekends away and hotel breaks that can be enjoyed by both of you.

If you’re single, why not use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to meet other singles? Log into your beFriend app and find someone interesting and like-minded to spend it with this year. Make this Valentine’s Day one to remember.
